Pioneertown

Pioneertown, California

An unincorporated live-in Western set north of Yucca Valley. People reside there; Mane Street is not a closed theme park.

What it is

Pioneertown sits off Pioneertown Road, north of Yucca Valley, in unincorporated San Bernardino County. It was built in the 1940s as a Western movie set that people lived in, which is why Mane Street still reads as a backlot. Residences, a motel, and the long-running Pappy & Harriet’s music room share that street with the false fronts. On a show night the two-lane road in is the whole traffic plan. The community site is pioneertown.com.

Who governs it

There is no city hall. The county supervisor, the sheriff, and the fire district are the public agencies. Water is limited and is not a casual hookup to Yucca Valley’s system. If you are buying or booking, ask where the water comes from and how the septic works, the same questions that matter on any parcel against these hills. Building permits go through the county.

Fire, wind, and juniper slopes

The town backs onto cooler slopes where California juniper and pinyon replace open creosote. A fire on that slope has one narrow public road for people leaving and engines arriving. Red-flag days are a reason to postpone a bonfire. The wind that clears the night sky also loads dust into every seal and screen. Winters are colder here than on the highway strip.

Visiting a place where people live

Walk Mane Street, spend money at businesses that are open, and skip the driveways and the side-yard photo. Dark-sky lighting is a local good; a rental’s floodlights undo it. Check whether a show is scheduled before you promise someone a quiet Saturday, because the venue fills the road. Confidence on the fine points of 1940s studio ownership is medium; the layout you can see, and the fact that it is a neighborhood, are not in doubt.
